Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
