Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in First Address
During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
